PrivSec Job Focus: Clive Hamilton, Managing Director, Orange Cyberdefense UK

In our latest reader-submitted Q&A, Clive Hamilton describes the challenge of countering ever-evolving security threats

What is your full job title?

Managing Director, Orange Cyberdefense UK.

How long have you worked in the industry?

30 years.

How long have you worked in your current role?

4 months.

How did you get into your current role?

After leaving my previous role of 13 years I was looking for a new challenge focused on cybersecurity. Orange Cyberdefense is a specialised cyber company and after several recent successful acquisitions in the UK is on a major growth trajectory to build a safer digital society.

What does a typical day look like?

Working in the dynamic and everchanging cybersecurity world there’s no such thing as a typical day!

Generally, I will start by checking in with my management team to discuss any customer challenges that may need addressing, work with the sales team regarding ongoing opportunities and go to market strategies and, depending on the time of the month, review financial figures. I interact regularly with both customers and vendors and would typically have discussions with both throughout the day.

What is your greatest achievement so far?

On a personal note, it is raising two wonderful children and reaching the summit of Kilimanjaro.

From a professional perspective it’s been developing myself from a technical background through pre sales to sales and ultimately to positions of overall leadership. I think this gives me a great overall understanding of all aspects of the business.

What is the most challenging thing about your role?

Given the current pandemic, the main challenge is ensuring our employees remain safe and are not suffering adversely from the current remote working environment. The team has reacted amazingly and has managed to keep motivated and engaged, continuing to support our customers to the high standards we pride ourselves on.

Given the pandemic and the accelerated need for digital transformation and remote working, cybersecurity has become even more crucial. Attack vectors are evolving and the traditional boundaries of the office or factory have dissolved – our challenge as Orange Cyberdefense is to not keep up with, but to keep ahead of these ever-evolving threats.

What part of your role do you enjoy the most?

The most enjoyable aspect is interacting with customers and receiving positive feedback that, through deploying our services, they have realised their own business goals. I also get great satisfaction from seeing individuals within the company grow and develop and reach their own personal goals.

How do you see your role/industry changing in the next few years?

The role of cybersecurity specialists such as Orange Cyberdefense will only continue to become more central to any organisation as they go through the digital transformation journey. Attacks are increasingly more sophisticated and, along with technology, it is vital that a layered approach is adopted combining technology, processes and people.

Would you recommend working in this role, please give your reasons?

Yes, I certainly would. Cybersecurity is such a dynamic area to work in and no day is the same – it’s also a constant learning experience. It’s incredibly satisfying knowing I am involved in creating a safer digital society and enabling organisations to achieve their business goals and protecting them from disruptive external influences.
